How myLoop supports pregnancy

  • Tanya started using myLoop during her pregnancy

Tanya has been living with type 1 diabetes for over 20 years. During her pregnancy, she began using myLoop. During this special yet stressful time, it was important for Tanya to listen to her body and to find a therapy which suited her. She appreciates the fact that during a rather difficult pregnancy, the diabetes aspect was made easy. This was one aspect that she did not need to worry about because she knew she was being supported.

Helpful support – before, during and after pregnancy

Tanya's advice for women who want to become pregnant:

‘‘It is important to take time to get the right support for yourself. The journey is long and you want the best team who will advocate for you.’’

There is a lot to consider during pregnancy. Before the hybrid closed-loop system, Tanya had still quite a bit of control, but she did not realise how much time it takes to think about diabetes and its treatment.

‘‘To switch from my previous therapy to myLoop was the best and easiest transition for multiple reasons. Once the switch was made, there was a change in my mindset that needed to happen. Letting go of expectations and trusting the system to learn its own way was liberating.’’

Once she started trusting myLoop, she felt as though she had a weight lifted off her shoulders and it profoundly lessened her mental load. The support of myLoop does not stop once the baby is born. The ability to have a system that works for as she focused on her baby was a huge support. She felt as though someone had her back. Whenever a bolus is forgotten, the algorithm jumps in and covers what she previously had to do herself.

‘‘As a new mother, I found myself snacking a lot instead of sitting down for a proper meal. The "Boost" feature and "Add meal" functions were a great advantage during this time.’’

In addition, myLoop also supported Tanya when breastfeeding:

‘‘myLoop has key features that support breastfeeding. Being able to easily adjust glucose targets and using "Ease-off" mode when needed was a necessity.’’

Expansion is contingent upon local regulatory approval.Insulin pumps and Automated Insulin Delivery (AID) systems can improve glucose management but do not remove the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). Because these systems use only rapid-acting insulin, any interruption in insulin delivery (e.g., infusion-set failure, occlusion, empty reservoir, or device malfunction) can rapidly lead to ketosis and DKA, even if glucose levels are not markedly elevated.

Healthcare professionals should ensure that users understand the risk of DKA associated with pump and AID therapy, particularly in situations where insulin delivery may be interrupted. Users should be trained to recognise and troubleshoot delivery issues promptly, know when and how to check for ketones and seek urgent medical assistance. Advise to always keep a reliable backup method of insulin delivery available. This information is provided for general educational purposes and is intended for healthcare professionals.
